Ex-England star Kenny Sansom may lose his foot to infection as he struggles to beat the booze

Arsenal legend has been battling the booze for years and now fears he may lose his iconic left foot after he spent a night in Farnborough Hospital

FALLEN footballer Kenny Sansom fears he may lose his foot in his battle to beat alcohol addiction.

Doctors have told the ex-England and Arsenal defender, 54, that bones in his famous left foot are infected.

reports that the limping star, who earnt 86 caps for his country, has been in hospital casualty wards twice in six days and is worried he could end up in a wheelchair.

Best friend Tom Bell, 34, said: “Kenny is in a really bad place at the minute. He’s drinking three or four bottles of dry white wine a day and is struggling to cope with his life.

“He got the infection after rubbing away scabs on the bottom of his foot.”

Kenny first spoke publicly about his battle with the bottle in 2011 and gave an exclusive interview to The Sun in September in which he revealed that he ‘loved drinking’.

He told our reporter: “I don’t want to stop – I love drinking.”

Comedian Russell Brand, 41, is now reported to be helping the ailing left back using his experience of overcoming drink and drugs.

The pair met at a game earlier in the year in which Crystal Palace took on West Ham – a club Kenny used to play for and the team Russell supports.

They remained in touch with the long-haired funny man coming to his aid on October 21 after Kenny was out on a drinking binge.

Russell took the ailing footballer to a clinic in Coventry and arranged an 18-week stay for him.

However, Kenny could only last a few days in the facility and checked himself out to hit the bottle again.

Kenny is also struggling to find a roof over his head after he broke up with his fiancée Denise Mullins.

Since leaving the clinic in Coventry, Kenny has spent a night in Farnborough Hospital and is due for more treatment next week.

Kenny made his professional footballing debut in 1975 for Crystal Palace at the age of 16 and his first international for England the year after.
