These warheads have a strike range of 3,500miles - though previous tests carried out by the secretive state have failed.

South Korea's said the test would be designed to show the North was not prepared to give up its nuclear weapons programme.

An official from Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said: "We are closely watching every move by the North Korean military at its Punggye-ri nuclear test site and other possible missile-launching sites.

A study published last month by a US-based North Korea research project said North Korean missile and nuclear tests and other major "provocations" had clustered increasingly closer to US elections.

North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in 2006 and has since defied UN sanctions to press ahead with the development of the weapons and missiles to carry them.

It carried out its fourth nuclear test in January and fifth and largest on September 9.
