”I always think that if you are in a position to help, you should.“

Sun readers alone have now backed the fund with £110,524 — enough to provide 2,210 emergency shelters or food for 4,420 families for ten days.

Your donations go alongside support from companies, such as £150,000 from British Gas owner Centrica and £5,000 from Pizza Express, taking the combined tally to nearly £1.2million.

Sir Tom, who became Scotland’s first home-grown billionaire after setting up Sports Division in the 1980s, urged others to donate, saying: “Even if it’s just a fiver, it can make a real difference.”

PM Rishi Sunak said Sun readers “responded by doing what British people do best — reaching out to help those in need”.
