Kellyanne Conway told MSNBC: "We haven't discussed that in recent days, and I think that it's all in due time."

During a rally last month Trump threatened to put the Democratic candidate in jail over allegations about her email use while serving as Barack Obama's Secretary of State.

He attacked her for operating a private email server during her tenure as chief diplomat from 2009 to 2013, saying she had endangered national security.

Asked on CNN about the possibility of a special prosecutor, Conway said: "We didn't discuss that last night, and he did not discuss that with Hillary Clinton on the phone."

The FBI investigation into the email scandal derailed Clinton's campaign for the White House.

But two days before Americans headed to the polls prosecutors cleared her, standing by their earlier finding that criminal charges were not warranted.

During his second debate with Clinton on October 9, Trump told her: "If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation.

"Because there has never been so many lies, so much deception. There has never been anything like it. And we're gonna have a special prosecutor."

Clinton, who has apologised over her email use, defended herself at the St. Louis debate: "You know it's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in this country."

Trump shot back: "Because you'd be in jail."

Asked on CNN about the possibility of a special prosecutor, Conway said: "We didn't discuss that last night, and he did not discuss that with Hillary Clinton on the phone."

Hillary had called Trump this morning to concede the race to the White House.

Anger has been spilling out into street brawls across America in the hours since the election.

It seems the divisions caused by the vote will continue to cause disputes as America waits to see what happens next.

In the hours since the result was named Theresa May and Valdimir Putin have been among the heads of state to congratulate Trump on his victory.
