Donald Trump hints at MAJOR u-turn over his pledge to scrap Obamacare as President-elect continues softening his stance on key election vows
Trump admits his mind was changed during 90-minute love-in with President Obama
PRESIDENT-elect Donald Trump has hinted he make a major u-turn on his key election pledge to scrap Barack Obama's flagship healthcare law.
His mind was changed during a 90-minute conversation with the outgoing President when the pair met for the first time on Thursday, Trump told the .
"Either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced. I told him I will look at his suggestions, and out of respect, I will do that", he told the paper.
Trump repeatedly attacked the Affordable Care Act, nicknamed 'Obamacare', throughout the election campaign.
He repeatedly said his first executive action in office would be to scrap the 2010 law altogether over claims it was too expensive and poorly run.
But in the interview Trump claimed there were aspects of the Act -- which has given health cover to 20 million Americans -- that he favoured.
He said regulations banning insurers from refusing cover for people with pre-existing conditions was positive.
Trump also said he was not opposed to making insurers allow children to stay covered on their parents' policies until they are 26.
“I like those very much,” Mr Trump said about the two keystone policies introduced with Obamacare.
It is the latest in several statements Trump has made softening his stance since his shock election.
In his victory speech he said the country owed a "huge debt of gratitude" to his rival Hillary Clinton while through the campaign he called for her to be jailed.
Trump also said he had "great respect" for Obama after their first meeting, which both men described as positive.
