A MUM blasted Tesco after staff refused her a free parking voucher because she bought formula baby milk.

The store told Laura Leeks, 34, that rules - brought in by the EU - meant it cannot promote the substitute ahead of breast milk.

She made the purchase at a store in Braintree, Essex, as her five-month-old son cannot tolerate breast milk’s high fat content after heart surgery.

Laura accused Tesco of “shaming women” and said: “I do not need to be guilt-tripped.”

She said staff told her they would not issue parking vouchers if you just bought tobacco either.

And she added: “I also cannot accept the comparison of formula feeding with the harmful effects of smoking.” Tesco said the law banned promoting baby formula “in any way” including offering parking vouchers.

Last night the Department of Health confirmed EU legislation prohibits discounts or promotions “or any other special activity” to promote the sale of an infant formula.

It could be among a raft of laws axed after Brexit.
