Two ‘Brit tourists’ die in paradise holiday hotspot in just two days as men, 65 and 46, drown in shark-infested waters
TWO tourists who are said to be British have drowned in just two days in the paradise holiday hotspot of the Maldives.
The pair died in eerily similar circumstances after drowning in shark-infested waters at picturesque atolls.
A 46-year-old man died just yesterday while at the popular Hammerhead Shark Point off the coast of the atoll of Rasdhoo.
He was diving before he drowned at around 9.12am.
The man was rushed to a local hospital but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.
A 65-year-old man then tragically drowned this morning at around 10.30am in the waters off the coast of Rasdhoo.
He was sadly pronounced dead on arrival at the Alif Alif Atoll hospital on the island.
The Rashdoo Atoll is renowned for its big fish and even bigger hammerhead sharks stalking the turquoise waters.
Tourists flock to the island in search of the beasts or the manta rays that patrol the ocean all year round.
Thrill seekers dive off Hammerhead Point in hopes of catching a glimpse of one of the fearsome sharks - which typically emerge early in the morning.
Grey reef sharks, whitetip sharks and schools of eagle rays also circle around the diving hotspot of Rasdhoo Madivaru.
Hammerhead sharks can grow up to a whopping six metres in size.
Officials in the Maldives issued a nationwide safety warning to holidaymakers in 2019 after a spike in drownings.
Five tourists, including a honeymooning couple, died in the space of just two weeks in January of that year.
A Brit woman, 69, drowned while snorkelling in November 2019 after being swept away from the tropical island of Kuredu.
Strong currents caused by a northeast monsoon were blamed for the worrying number of drownings.
Tourism chiefs identified "safe zones" for swimming and diving in the ocean.
