Top member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition party says any hopes Theresa May has for a new agreement will amount to nothing

A GERMAN politician has told Theresa May that she is “delusional” if she thinks she can sign a trade deal with Donald Trump in the near future.

Axel Schäfer , a top member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition party, said any hope the Prime Minister had of signing a swift agreement would amount to nothing.

about Trump’s surprise election victory, he said: “What changed is the likelihood of a speedy and preferential trade deal between UK and US.

“Even before Tuesday the chances were rather low, now the hope for this kind of deal seems delusional.”

He made the insulting comments just a couple of days after the government talked up chances of an agreement with the President-elect when he assumes office next January.

Dan DiMicco, who has been advising the infamous businessman on trade, told the BBC in July: “First off, [the British] are our friends, they have always supported us.

“We’ve worked together, and they are leaving the EU in our estimation for the right reasons.

“They have lost control of their economy, the job creation engine, so why shouldn’t we be working with like-minded people before we do a deal with anybody else?”

His comments were a marked difference to the ones made by President Obama in April, before the Brexit vote in June, in which he said Britain would go to the “back of the queue” if it left the EU.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said this week that people needed to end their “whinge-o-rama” over the election of the 70-year-old reality television star to the White House on Tuesday night.
