Facebook slams hipster shops for selling jars of ‘100% Genuine British Rain’ for £3.99

FACEBOOK users have slammed London hipster souvenir shops for selling bottles of “100% Genuine British Rain” for £3.99.

Creative agency Leo Burnett – which specialises in advertising, social media and direct marketing – created the product for keen tourists sick of sunshine, and homesick expats looking for a wet reminder of home.

“*Bottle made in China.”

Social media users have come out in droves to slam the idea.

One Facebook user shared a snap of the bottles of rain on sale in a store, captioning it: “They actually sell bottled rain in the shops! Wtf?? Who thinks up this s***?”

Others rushed to comment on the post, with one user making a valid reference to Only Fools and Horses icon Del Boy: “It’s no different than Del Boys in Peckham spring…”

Another disillusioned friend replied: “Does not surprise me. They sell air in jars in Cornwall.”

Slamming shops that feel there’s a market for the nation’s infamous rainfall, another user commented in a post: “British Rain just £3.99 on sale now in s*** card shops across London.”

Meanwhile, writing on Twitter, one user questioned the product’s existence: “Genius or plain right weird?

"Discovered 100% genuine bottled British Rain at @CarnabyLondon.”

Replying to the tweet, stockist We Built This City’s official account said: “Genius, of course!”

In an interview with , the man behind the concept, Ben Gough, said Britain needs to embrace the things it is renowned for.

He reasoned: “We moan about Britain’s iconic rainy weather.

“But I say embrace it. It’s a famous part of our heritage and culture.

“Tourists actually expect it.

“So not only can they experience British rain when they visit, they can now take it home as a souvenir."

Gough, who says the bottled water is a better gift than the generic Big Ben paraphernalia London’s souvenir shops are full of, says he even uses real rain to fill the bottles.

Which aspect of British life will be turned into a souvenir next – bottled roast dinners? Or a bottled puddle, perhaps?

100% Genuine British Rain is available for purchase at We Built This City, Crest of London souvenir shops, and a number of online retailers.
