Two Brits arrested for ‘trying to flee Spanish bar without paying £2,000 champagne bill’

TWO British men have been arrested for allegedly trying to flee a Spanish bar where they had run up a champagne bill of nearly £2,000.

The pair, aged 49 and 52, shouted “We’re millionaires” to reassure staff — as they invited other customers to help them guzzle about 90 glasses of fizz.

But they then allegedly made to leave the Madrid nightspot early on Wednesday without settling their £1,930 drinks bill.

They were also said to have become aggressive when police were called to settle the dispute.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of fraud and turned over to the courts to decide further action.

The incident happened as Liverpool fans were in the Spanish capital for their team’s Champions League game with Real Madrid. But it has not been confirmed whether the two men involved in the incident at Commo, a popular bar and disco, were Reds fans.

Before their champagne binge they had settled an £880 bar bill, which had reassured staff they would pay.

The National Police in Madrid said the pair were especially keen to offer drinks to women in the bar.

It added: “They were telling bar staff not to worry because they were millionaires and insisting they would come back later to pay the bill.

“The men even allegedly started to become a bit violent in their attitude towards the bar staff when they were told they couldn’t leave without paying.”
