Mexico’s richest including Carlos Slim lose £5bn in peso collapse – enough cash to build Trump border wall

MEXICO'S richest people have lost enough money since the US election to build Donald Trump's controversial border wall.

The world's richest people lost £44 billion ($56bn) as a result of Trump's shock win, Bloomberg has reported.

The victory caused jitters in markets around the globe, with no-one quite sure what some of his far-fetched campaign promises are going to mean for them.

The markets are being hit the hardest in Mexico, where apprehension looms over Trump's pledge to build a wall on the US-Mexico border and to send Mexican migrants packing.

The 10  richest Mexican billionaires dropped a combined £5.2bn (US$6.5bn) with the richest of them, Carlos Slim, losing £4bn of his £14bn fortune (US5.1bn) - enough to pay for the construction of the wall.

Trump has promised to deport 11 million undocumented migrants and build a wall along the border.

He has said Mexico will pay for the barrier that could harm relations with one of the nation's biggest trade partners.

"I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively," Trump has said.

"I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall."

There are nearly 2,000 miles separating Mexico and the US and about 650 miles already have vehicle and pedestrian fencing.

Building his wall could require about 339 million cubic feet of concrete, or three times what was used to build the Hoover Dam.

It will be made of precast concrete and reach up to 50 feet in height.

He has said he will force Mexico to pay for the wall by blocking Mexicans who want to send money back home to Mexico from doing so if they don't show documentation proving their legal status.

"It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5 (billion)-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year," Trump said on his campaign website.
