But despite Labour’s lead in the polls, swing voters still think Rishi Sunak is a better PM than Sir Keir Starmer would ever be.

Voters in Wolverhampton, Heywood and Middleton and Hastings and Rye told the JL Partners group for Times Radio that they all backed Rishi.

Another added: “I don’t like Keir Starmer, I find him very flat.”

One said: “Rishi, he’s a pretty stable and competent guy, him as a person but not them as a party.”

One Labour individual said to Westminster observers: “We’re trying to convey managerial political standards, and so is Rishi.

“The difference is Rishi is doing it with a smile and Keir can’t do it with a smile.”

Cheerier news for Labour arrived from their Scottish leader, Anas Sarwar, who said it had a 31 per cent vote share in Scotland — which translates into 15 seats.

But for every one per cent gained, they’ll win another three seats.
