The Facebook-owned firm has spent years giving its users more and more ways to "stay in touch with friends, family, and others they care about".

Now WhatsApp's one billion fans can make video calls using Android, iPhone, and Windows devices.

In a statement provided exclusively to The Sun Online, WhatsApp wrote: "We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough.

"There’s no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter’s face while she’s studying abroad.

"We want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks."

The messaging app's new functionality is designed to be straight-forward and easy to use.

It is also custom built to let users talk to people who own different devices or live on the other side of the world.

You can see this in the images below, which shows two chums communicating using Apple and Android mobiles.

"Our goal at WhatsApp has always been to help as many people as possible stay in touch with friends, family, and others they care about," the messaging app added.

"That means making a product that’s simple, easy to use, and accessible no matter where you are.

"We started with messaging and Group Chat. Then we added voice calling.

"And we did it in a way that works across thousands of device and platform combinations all over the world."

"Today we’re excited to announce the next step in our efforts to connect people – WhatsApp video calling."

The messaging app recently introduced the ability to send animated gifs.

WhatsApp video calling arrived on Android last month, but today marks the first time it is available on Apple devices and smartphones running Windows.
