JAGUAR is making its own electric sports car to take on like likes of US trendsetter Tesla.

The British-made Jaguar I-PACE will be able to beat nearly ALL top racers off the line - with a 0-60mph time of just four seconds.

But the brand's distinctive roar will be muted in this model -- as it runs on two silent electric motors.

The sleek five-seater - described as a cross between an SUV and a flat-out performance car - is expected to hit the roads in 2018.

And despite achieving 400bhp from its battery pack, Jaguar say it is no more difficult to charge than an electric razor as it plugs straight into a typical socket.

An overnight charge is enough to manage a typical 30 mile round-trip commute, while a full charge could take you over ten times that distance, the carmaker says.

Inside it will have two touchscreens and will be filled to the brim with "premium materials".

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s director of design, described the look of the car as the "next generation of electric vehicle design."

A prototype of the I-PACE concept was debuted at the Los Angeles Car Show on the back of Jaguar Land Rover - owned by India's Tata conglomerate - revealing a £280m profit in the latest quarter.

While a price has not yet been revealed, it is expected to run in direct competition with Tesla's range of high performance electric vehicles.

Tesla - owned by eccentric entrepreneur Elon Musk - has pioneered fuel-free and driverless cars.

However, its Model X self-driving motor has come under intense criticism after a series of fatal collisions.

The company has insisted the crashes were down to human error and not the fault of its driverless system.
