Along with an estimated 250,000 trapped civilians who are marooned in the city, they risking being killed by the recent resumption of Russian airstrikes.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been flying a destructive bombing campaign in Syria for the past year in support of his friend President Bashar al-Assad.

But it is now it is feared Putin is using the period between now and when President Elect Donald Trump is inaugurated in January to do most of the heaviest bombing.

Russia announced a “humanitarian pause” on the bombing campaign last week against rebel-held eastern districts after a previous one ran out.

Text messages were reportedly fired off to residents on Sunday warning they have 24 hours to flee before the blitz begins.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the rebel-held sector since the army launched an offensive to recapture it in September.

The death toll has drawn international condemnation of both Damascus and Moscow.

The European Union said Russian actions “may amount to war crimes”.
