UK weather: 60mph winds batter parts of Britain TODAY as Met Office releases yellow warning – & it’s going to get worse

THE Met Office has warned 60mph winds could batter parts of the UK today as they released a yellow weather warning.

And the tumultuous weather is set to get worse - with another two weather warnings for wind in place for tomorrow.

According to the Met Office, some winds could reach up to 60mph along the coast today, while winds of 45 to 50mph could be recorded inland near Cornwall.

Today is due to get off to a reasonable start with sunny spells and a few scattered showers but conditions will deteriorate as the day wears on thanks to a band of low pressure sweeping in from the south west.

The Met Office’s yellow weather warning then kicks in this afternoon from 3pm and covers most of England’s western coast.

The alert warns strong winds bring the potential for "some disruption", adding: "Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves."

The warning stretches from Cornwall right along the Welsh coast and into northern England and across to eastern Northern Ireland.

And two weather alerts are in place for tomorrow, with similar warnings for travel delays.

The warnings cover most of south west England, stretching into south west Wales and all along England's southern coast covering Kent's northern coast.

As well, there is a yellow weather warning for wind which covers all of Northern Ireland.

Both warnings are in place from 6am to 8pm.

Wednesday's warning says wind speeds could reach a maximum of 70mph in coastal areas while inland there would be a maximum of 50mph.

It comes as the Met warned snow could be seen in some areas at higher ground later this week.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates said: “The focus for the medium-range forecast is a low-pressure system that’s likely to develop just to the south west of the UK, potentially bringing a period of high winds and heavy rain late on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

“There’s a distinct possibility of some disruptive wind for parts of the UK, especially in southern and western areas, as well as potential for heavy rainfall and even some snow, though the latter probably confined to high ground in the north.

“Although subject to a large degree of uncertainty, gusts of wind could be in excess of 60 mph in some exposed upland or coastal regions, with around 35-50 mm of rain possible for some areas.”

Overnight, Scotland will see further spells of rain which will turn to snow over the mountains.

Many other areas will be hit with rain or showers which could be heavy in places along with some thunder.

Eastern Scotland will also be hit by gale force winds.

All parts of the UK will see rain or showers as the working day gets going on Wednesday with snow on the northern mountains.

It will remain windy with parts of the west and south west battered by severe gales.

Looking further ahead it will remain cold and breezy at times with showers and some longer periods of rain throughout Thursday and Friday.

Things with start to pick up on Saturday which will see some drier and warmer conditions and some sunny spells.
