Bristol’s plan for ‘poo bus’ fleet powered by human WASTE has been flushed

PLANS to introduce "poo buses" have been flushed after the government turned down funding.

A fleet of 'Bio-Buses' powered by human waste were expected to be rolled out in Bristol after a trial -- on the city's number two route.

But a funding bid from operator Wessex Bus to The Office for Low Emission Vehicles was turned down.

The pongy tech was developed by Wessex Water's renewable energy arm GENeco to show how methane extracted from poo could replace dirty fossil fuels to power homes and cars.

Gas collected from an average person's yearly waste would be enough to power a poo bus for 37 MILES.

Transport firm First West of England wanted funding for 110 poo-powered double-deckers to run on forty per cent of Britsol's network -- while Wessex Bus and GENeco asked for £2.5m to fund 20 buses.

The gas collected for the buses from sewage treatment works in Avonmouth will now be put into the national gas network.

Ian Drury, from GENeco, said while the failed bid was disappointing the buses had helped spark "debate" about the use of human waste as fuel.

He also said funding had been provided for 70 poo buses to run elsewhere in the country.
