HEART-melting footage shows a giant polar bear gently stroking a defenceless sled dog while it is chained up.
Filmed by David De Meulles in the Canadian wilds, the extraordinary video shows the placid mutt being petted by the huge apex predator.
De Meulles told about incredible act of inter-species kindness.
He said: “I had no idea what was going to happen, and then sure enough he started petting that dog, acted like he was a friend
“I just so happened to catch a video of a lifetime.”
Polar bears are top of the artic food chain and can easily kill and eat sled dogs – especially those which are chained up.
De Meulles, from Ontario, was talking to tourists when he witnessed the special moment.
And he confirmed he was astonished by what he saw.
He said: “I've known the bears to have somewhat friendly behaviour with the dogs, but for a bear to pet like a human would pet a dog is just mind-blowing.
“It was a beautiful sight to see, and I just can't believe an animal that big would show that kind of heart toward another animal.”
The brave hound belongs to local Brian Ladoon who breeds the fearless sled dogs which are impervious to the freezing conditions.
He told CBC that while there are have been a few “scares” involving bears his heroic dogs are relatively untroubled by the hulking predators.
