A WHEELBARROW full of dead puppies was discovered in a RSPCA raid, with more than 40 dogs found in squalid conditions.

Two people have now been given a suspended jail sentence over the horrific discovery with heart-breaking footage showing dozens of dogs left without food and water in filthy stables.

In a horrific discovery, one of the brown collies in the wheelbarrow was still breathing, struggling to survive under the bodies of the other puppies.

The little dog was immediately rushed to a vet but died soon after. It emerged seven dogs had died from parvovirus.

The RSPCA raid also revealed the disgusting conditions that dozens of other dogs were kept in with many locked in cages or concrete stables.

Tiny black puppies were found abandoned and others appeared to be left without food or water and living in their own filth.

Two people have now been disqualified from keeping dogs for life after being found guilty of a string of animal welfare offences.

Farm manager John Wilcock and Bernadette Nunney, both of Bradford, pleaded not guilty to several animal cruelty offences. She was found guilty last month following a four-day trial.

Both were sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, and were disqualified from keeping dogs for life.

Nunney was also handed a 12-week curfew order, a 15-day rehabilitation activity and £500 in costs.

Wilcock was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation activity. He was also ordered to pay £100 in costs.

RSPCA inspector Emma Ellis said the scenes at the puppy farm would stay with her for ever.

She said: "The sight of the live puppy buried within the pile of dead puppies was heartbreaking. There was nothing we could do to save her.

"The way those puppies were left to die highlights how these people simply see them as commodities which I find totally unacceptable."

She added: "Dozens of dogs were being kept at the address in stables and kennel blocks. Many had no food, no water, no bedding, and all of them were living in their own filth."

Inspectors found 43 dogs - including collies, spaniels, bichon frises, Labradors, beagles, Chihuahuas, and some terrier-cross types - in the raid.

A HAPPY ENDING

COVERED in urine and faeces, little Gizmo was rescued from a puppy farm, shivering and frightened.
The lhasa apso had been saved from the Bradford puppy farm, found grossly underweight and suffering from worms and infected ears.
The frightened pup was found by the RSPCA, with the pup living with horrendous deformities due to bad breeding.
New owner Carrie Evans said she was shocked at his condition when she first saw him.
She said: "He was exceptionally frightened and very poorly. He was grossly underweight, had worms, had Giardia - an intestinal infection - and infected ears
"Due to bad breeding, Gizmo has horrendous deformities in his legs and feet, and his feet can sometimes rotate backwards. He also has an undershot jaw.”
She said the pup had suffered serious setbacks due to the puppy farm.
She said: "It took him several weeks to learn and develop trust in people. Even to this day, despite considerable appropriate socialisation, he continues to be wary and nervous of humans, I think this will be lifelong for Gizmo. He will gain confidence but he will never be 100%.”

Many had been locked in metal and brick cages.

RSPCA special operations unit chief inspector (CI) Ian Briggs, said: “There is a growing demand for certain breeds of dogs - such as chihuahuas, spaniels and bichon frises - and genuine, regulated breeders simply cannot meet demand.

"Unregulated puppy breeders and dealers are plugging this gap in the market by producing dogs on a commercial scale and putting money and profits ahead of the health, welfare and happiness of the dogs."
