Rishi Sunak will continue referring to the ‘Brecon Beacons’ despite demands to use the Welsh name
PM Rishi Sunak will continue referring to the “Brecon Beacons”, defying eco-campaigners’ demands to use the Welsh name.
Park bosses want the mountain range to be called “Bannau Brycheiniog”.
They say the image of a wood-burning flaming beacon clashes with their green agenda.
Chief Catherine Mealing-Jones said the symbol “isn’t a good look” when the park is aiming to achieve net zero by 2035.
The PM was previously unaware of the name change when quizzed by The Sun earlier this month.
Now he says: “I’m going to keep calling it the Brecon Beacons and I would imagine most people will.”

Some Welsh people support Mr Sunak’s stance.
Broadcaster John Humphrys said the name change is “pointless” and will not do anything to save the planet.
However, the PMs comments drew some angry responses.
Plaid Cymru’s Heledd Fychan called this “an imperialist and dated attitude”.
