Pent-up visitors took to social media branding the event "horrendous", "a joke" and so bad that even "Santa f****d off".

Jean Sanderson and her family, who travelled to the event on Friday from Chesterfield, told : "The entrance was not fit for push chairs and disabled people and the Santa's grotto was not even finished yet.

"Some children were upset and I expected to see more stalls.

"I know the weather doesn't help but the organisation was poor.

"There was no atmosphere at all."

Jean said she eventually left as there was "nothing there".

Twitter user Catt Haswell said: "Bakewell 'winter wonderland' what a joke, no Santa, no Christmas cheer & had to pay £7 before we knew."

Roger Martin said: "Good to see Bakewell Winter Wonderland is doing its bit to celebrate the anniversary of the Somme."

Another David Izzard posted: "Bakewell winter wonderland biggest bag of s*** ever.

"Even Santa f***d it off and didn't turn up."

On Facebook, Lorraine Taylor wrote: "Absolutely horrendous and a rip off! £7 entry fee plus £5 to park!

"No Christmas gift stalls like I thought there would be just loads of food stalls & fair ground rides!
"It was all hyped up to be such a great event.

"Very disappointed don't blame people for wanting their money back - don't waste your time or money."

The Bakewell Winter Wonderland and Christmas Market, which started yesterday, runs this weekend and again from December 9 to 11.

"We can only apologise for any inconvenience caused however we cannot avoid the awful weather we have experienced!
"All winter wonderland is now open including Santa's grotto, ice rink and our reindeers."

The organisers have been approached for a comment.
