A WOMAN is suing UK Athletics for failing to protect her from a convicted paedophile coach.
She claims Darrell Bunn, who trained Olympic gold medallists Jessica Ennis and Denise Lewis, began grooming then sexually abusing her when she was aged 16.
The alleged victim, now in her early 30s, is also suing Birmingham’s Birchfield Harriers where she trained. She reported Bunn to UKA in 2003 and he was told he must be supervised when coaching girls under 18.
In 2013 she gave police a statement and last January her lawyers wrote to the governing body. It is yet to respond fully as it probes the claim. If it does not reply, court action will begin.

The woman, who claims her ordeal started in 1999, said: “I’m angry that after 13 years I still haven’t had an apology. That’s all I really want. The fact UKA haven’t even replied to a legal letter after ten months shows absolute contempt.”
Abuse lawyer Richard Scorer from Slater and Gordon, representing the woman, said: “It is outrageous that UKA have failed to respond. We now have no option but to take them to court.”
Ex-PE teacher Bunn, 66 was given a suspended sentence in 2014 after admitting sex assaults on a teenage girl.
UKA said: “We can’t comment on specific allegations.” Birchfield Harriers declined to comment.
