Key global temperature limit ‘likely’ to be hit in 5 years
A KEY global temperature limit is likely to be broken between now and 2027, scientists warn.
They estimate a 66 per cent chance the average will be more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels in the next five years.
The World Meteorological Organisation also said it was almost certain the hottest-ever year will be recorded in that time.
Most nations around the world committed to limit temperatures to 1.5C above levels in pre-industrial times as part of the Paris Agreement.
Dr Leon Hermanson of the Met Office said: “We have never crossed 1.5C.
“The current record is 1.28C. It’s very likely we’re going to exceed that.

“We might even reach 1.5C. It’s more likely than not we will.”
However he stressed that a breach of the limit does not mean the planet has permanently crossed the threshold.
