Addressing the 200 attendees who had gathered at the Ronald Reagan Building, NPI President Richard B. Spencer shouted: “Hail Trump! Hail our people! Hail victory!”

Spencer’s cries were met with a flurry of Nazi salutes from the audience, which can be seen in video published by .

Outstretched arms flew up from many in the audience as they rose to their feet and applauded.

It should be said that the meeting was not officially associated with the US president-elect, and has no concrete ties to any of his campaign team.

But both the speakers and the audience at the event were clearly enthusiastic about their next president.

Spencer used his platform to rail against the “mainstream media” – a common theme of Trump’s campaign.

According to the , he asked the audience: “Perhaps we should refer to them in the original German?”

Members of the crowd then shouted back “Lügenpresse!” – meaning “lying press” – a term used by the Nazis to attack critical media organisations critical of their cause and tactics.

He also called the Republican nominee’s election “the victory of will” – an eerie echo of the most famous or Hitler’s propaganda films, Triumph of the Will.

And the alt right commentator described America as “a white country” and declared white people “a race that travels forever on an upward path”.

Frighteningly, he also said whites “don’t gain anything from [other races’] presence – they need us, and not the other way around”.

The alt right movement in the US is a loose grouping of people on the right wing who don’t believe mainstream conservatism is extreme enough.

They have been branded racists and neo-Nazis by their critics, and are accused of anti-Semitism.

Twitter recently suspended the accounts of several prominent members of the movement following Trump's election, including Spencer himself.

Spencer described the move as a “Stalinist purge”.
