The First Bus crashed into the railway bridge at Cook Street at around 11.35am on Sunday morning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service and cops are currently on scene.

Cops have warned drivers to avoid the area to ensure access for the emergency services.

Pictures from the scene show the devastating impact of the crash, with the roof of the bus completely ripped off.

Ten casualties were taken to hospital after the smash.

The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

The smash sparked rail and road chaos, with closures still in place.

Chief Inspector Elaine Tomlinson, Greater Glasgow Division, said: "Around 11.35am on Sunday, 21 May, 2023, we received a report of a bus crashing into a bridge on Cook Street, Glasgow.

"Emergency services attended and 10 people were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

"A number of road closures remain in place, with disruption to some rail services.

"I would like to thank the public for their co-operation and ask they continue to avoid the area while enquires are ongoing.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Operations control mobilised three appliances to Cook Street, where firefighters supported partners to make the area safe.

"Three casualties have been transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by the Scottish Ambulance Service and a number of additional casualties are being treated at the scene."

Emergency crews have closed roads in Salkeld Street, Kilbirnie Street and Commerce Street and police are directing traffic in the area.

First Bus confirmed to the BBC it was one of its buses which was involved.

A company spokesperson told them: "We are working closely with the emergency services at the scene and our thoughts are with those involved in the incident."

Network Rail, who shared an image of the roof off the bus ripped off, warned travellers of delays on the rail network.

They wrote: "We're assisting the emergency services, who are responding to a bus trapped beneath a bridge between Glasgow Central & Paisley Gilmour Street.

"We need to complete a safety inspection of the bridge before trains can use it again, we can only do this once the bus has been removed."

ScotRail advised its passengers that trains that its Paisley Gilmour Street Service from Glasgow Central has been affected, warning they may be delayed, revised or cancelled.

The train line was later reopened at around 2.40pm after an inspection of the bridge.

A spokesperson for First Bus said: "We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in the incident on Cook St, earlier today.

"We are working closely with the emergency services at the scene and our thoughts are with those involved in this accident."
