What happened to Caleb Schwab?

Ten-year-old Caleb Schwab, the son of Kansas Republican State Senator Scott Schwab, visited the park in August 2016 and went on the Verruckt ride.

Two or three people sit in a raft at the top of the structure before they plummet nearly vertically downwards, with pressurised jets that then push them over a second 50ft hill.

Caleb got on the raft with two women who he did not know; safety rules for the ride state riders must weigh between 400 and 500 pounds (29st-36st) in total and each must be taller than 4.5ft.

The three went down the ride, but it slammed violently, causing Caleb to break his neck and the two other women to suffer minor injuries.

Witnesses say Caleb was decapitated.

The terms of agreement are not formally known however reported that the judge who approved the wrongful death settlement found it was 'fair, reasonable, valid and equitable' and that is served the best interests of everyone involved.

Police and safety authorities are still investigating the incident to determine if criminal charges can be brought against the water park.

Caleb's parents, Scott and Michelle, spoke out about the devastating day their little boy's life was cut short,  "(Nathan) was screaming, 'He flew from the Verruckt, he flew from the Verruckt'."

Devastated dad Scott said:  “Before they took off I said, ‘Brothers stick together.’ And (Caleb) said, “I know dad.”

Is the Verruckt water slide still open?

Schlitterbahn announced in November 2016 that the slide would be permanently closed in light of the tragic situation.

"In our opinion, it is the only proper course of action following this tragedy," the park said in a statement.

Another ride will be built in the Verruckt's place, but the announcement for the new ride will be made "at some point in the future."

"As we move forward, we assure everyone who works for us and the community: we remain wholly committed to our Kansas City park and the original vision of Schlitterbahn -- providing a great place to work and an environment for families and friends to gather together," the park said.
