Nigel Farage says Theresa May ‘doesn’t seem to want me’ as he plays down his chances of becoming UK’s ambassador to America
Ukip leader said he wouldn’t necessarily put the words ‘Farage’ and ‘Ambassador’ together, before adding ‘anything is possible’
NIGEL Farage says maybe he “isn’t the type” to become the UK’s ambassador to America as he moaned that Theresa May “doesn’t seem to want me”.
The Ukip leader played down his chances of taking over the senior diplomatic role in Washington, but added that in 2016 “anything is possible”.
Donald Trump broke with diplomatic protocol by suggesting Mr Farage would do a “great job”, infuriating the Government, after the pair had a meeting in New York.
After No10 slapped down the President-elect’s idea, saying there was “no vacancy” – leading to the Ukip boss and leading Brexiteer to hit out at the “cesspit” of politics.
But despite seemingly auditioning for the job with a tray of Ferrero Rocher this week and revealing he planned to head back to America next month, he seems to have cooled on the idea.
He told CNN: “I don’t think I’m going to be made British ambassador, let’s be honest. I’m not Foreign Office…maybe I’m not the type.
“But I did have 20 years in business before getting involved with politics, I do know how to cut deals, I do have the support, amazingly, of the President-Elect, and I do know a number of his team, some of whom I’ve known for years.”

Mr Farage added: “In normal terms, I wouldn’t necessarily put the words ‘Farage’ and ‘Ambassador’ together. However, 2016 has been a year of dramatic change, so I think anything is possible.
“But Mr Trump may think it’s a very good idea, the question is ‘What does Mrs May think?’ and so far, I have to say, over the last couple of weeks since I met the President-Elect, I keep saying I would love to play a constructive middle-man role between the administrations, but they don’t seem to want me for some reason.”
After sources revealed he is mulling over whether to abandon post-Brexit Britain and emigrate to America with his wife, he was asked what he was hoping to gain from his upcoming trip stateside.
He said: “Nothing, I’m not seeking anything. I’m seeking my country getting closer again to the United States of America after eight years of Obama, who frankly looked down his nose and sneered at us.
“We’re about to get back that very special relationship that between us did some much for freedom, liberty and democracy in the world.”
It comes after Nick Clegg said making Mr Farage the UK’s ambassador to the US is an “absolutely great idea”.
The former Deputy Prime Minister said:“Send Nigel Farage to Washington and let him spend all his time in cocktail parties on the diplomatic circuit.
“That would be great, as far as I’m concerned.”
