Rajat, an engineer, and Ruchita, an HR professional, had left their little daughter Ritisha at Purva Nursery in Kharghar in Mumbai in western India on November 21.

The first-time parents were extremely apprehensive of leaving their only child in the hands of strangers.

But the couple were comforted by the nursery worker who assured them that they could check on their child using the centre’s CCTV cameras.

However, the same evening when Ruchita arrived at the centre to pick her daughter, she was horrified to find a bruise under her eye.

She was told that the toddler had hurt herself while playing.

But at night, while changing her clothes, the young mother found more bruises on her daughter’s back and behind her ears.

They took her to the doctor early the next morning who told them the baby had been beaten.

Ruchita said: “She had fracture in the skull and there was a blood clot. #

“We went straight to the day care centre and demanded to see the CCTV footage, but the owner told us to file a police complaint first.

“We then rushed to the Kharghar police station and only learnt what had happened to our daughter when the cops checked the CCTV footage the next day.

“We could not believe our eyes what we saw. It was inhuman.

“The maid was manhandling my daughter, hitting her with toys and throwing her on the mat.”

Irate dad Rajat added: “We just saw what she did to my baby – who knows how she is treating the other kids at the centre.”

A report was filed in the early hours and both the maid Afsana Shaikh, 39, and the centre's owner Priyanka Nikam were arrested.

Sunil Thopate, assistant police inspector, said: “The owner was released on bail, while the maid remains in magisterial custody.

“The owner has stated that the incident happened while she was out for lunch.

“The maid is a cleaner at the centre but was looking after the children that day because the regular maids were on leave.”

Rishita has suffered a small fracture at the back of her skull.

She is in a stable condition but is being kept under observation for two days at Fortis Hospital.
