They were forcibly removed from their homes and taken to a public park before being blasted in the head by a firing squad on Friday, the reports.

According to Captain Hamad al-Ebeidi, the jihadis also blew up five homes used for detaining prisoners, and exploded four booby-trapped vehicles across Mosul.

The massacre comes as the Iraqi government and popular forces have discovered a number of mass graves since commencing operations to retake Mosul.

ISIS are renowned for ruthlessly slaughtering their opponents and individuals who fail to comply with their rules, and often share videos of the killings on social media.

The Iraqi government estimates it has recaptured 50 per cent of Mosul from ISIS less than a month after commencing the operation.

Speaking to local reporters, Brigadier General Yahia Rasoul said: “Our forces have become in control of 50 per cent of Nineveh since the launch of military operations.”

In a desperate bid to keep its stronghold intact, militants have carried out a series of high-profile diversionary attacks in the past month.

But Maan al-Saadi, a commander for the Counter-Terrorism Service, says their efforts are pointless.

The violence comes as the Iraqi government and popular forces have come across a number of mass graves since commencing operations to retake Mosul last month.

Speaking this week, he bluntly said: "They cannot flee. They have two choices — give up or die."

US official John Dorrian further explained the situation: "The Iraqi advance on the south and southeast of the city has started to pick up some steam, which we think is a really great development.

"It is extraordinarily tough fighting, just brutal, but there is an inevitability to it. The Iraqis are going to beat them."

Meanwhile, the United Nations estimates around 68,000 people have been displaced by the fighting.
