Gran stabbed grandson, 5, to death in kitchen before running to Co-op and screaming for help
A GRAN stabbed her five-year-old grandson to death in the kitchen before running into a Co-op screaming for help.
David-Mario Lazar was found dead in a pool of blood by police at a home in Coventry last January.
His grandmother Elena Anghel, 51, has now been given a hospital order after she admitted manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.
Warwick Crown Court was told she was suffering delusions linked to mental illness at the time of the horror.
Anghel had been treated for psychotic and depressive disorders in her native Romania but David-Mario's parents were not aware of any continuing mental health issues at the time.
David-Mario was being looked after by Anghel while his parents Cristina and Dorinel were at work.
The court was told she launched into a "sustained sharp force assault" after grabbing a knife in the kitchen.
Anghel then made her way to a Co-op store slapping her face and shouting "police".
She believed the mafia were out to get her grandson and said she killed him out of "love".
Prosecutor Chris Tehrani KC said: "She said that he had killed her grandson so that he would not suffer any more serious assaults at the hands of a family member.

"These claims are false. The defendant accepts they are false. The delusions are as a consequence of the defendant's mental health.
"The defendant did say she'd done what she'd done to Mario out of love because 'I love him very much' and that it would be better if he died there than continue to suffer."
The court was told police entered the home to find David-Mario lifeless in a pool of blood in the kitchen.
In a victim impact statement, David-Mario's mum said: "Mario was five years old when he died and he was killed by my mother.
"I still cannot believe this has happened. It is over a year ago now and nothing changes."
The statement continued: "In our home Mario is everywhere. There are pictures and memories of him all over.
"He will never be forgotten.
"I never saw her (Anghel) do anything around my son that would alarm me. She loved him and he loved her.
"I would never have trusted her to care for Mario if she had shown any signs of illness."
David-Mario's parents previously paid tribute to the youngster following the horror on January 25.
A statement said: "Our son, he was the most beautiful child in the world.
"He was a very happy boy. He was always smiling from when he woke up to when he went to sleep.

"He had so much energy. He loved to dance and sing. He is all of our hearts, all our love and is everything to both of us."
A post mortem confirmed that little David-Mario died from stab wounds.
