Aylesbury Young Offenders riot sees thug inmates at Britain’s toughest youth jail lob pool balls and furniture

THUGS at Britain's toughest youth jail caused thousands of pounds of damage in an orgy of violence.

At least 30 inmates at Institute in Buckinghamshire threw furniture and pool balls at staff.

They rioted for 45 minutes after being unlocked at 8.30am before extra staff helped restore order.

A source said: "This has been coming and it is no surprise the placed kicked off.

"There has been growing tension and it only needed a spark. They were completely out of control.

"Officers were forced to retreat and all available staff were called to the unit."

A hero prison officer was treated for slight injuries.

Eight inmates were placed on report and will be moved to other jails.

An hour later, seven prisoners in another wing were involved in a mass brawl.

One was treated for scalding injuries in the jail's health care centre after having hot water poured over him.

Another had a large head wound stitched up.

In the afternoon, an inmate also tried to hang himself in his cell by using a ligature.

He was found by staff and saved. The lag was seen at a local hospital and returned to the jail.

The trouble kicked off a day on 16 November - the day after 10,000 prison officers walked out in protest at escalating violence.

Prison Officers Association members were ordered back to work after the government won a High Court injunction.

Glyn Travis of the Prison Officers Association said: "This is another example of the danger faced by prison officers every day.

"This time, through the professional action of officers, major trouble was prevented."

Aylesbury holds youths aged 17-20-years old. It has room for 440 inmates.

One in five is believed to be serving life for murder. It has a strong gang presence.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Staff at HMP Aylesbury successfully resolved an incident involving a small number of people on Sunday 13 November.

"This incident is being investigated by the police so it would be inappropriate to comment further."
