Arrogance of Angela Merkel and EU President Donald Tusk steadily increases the loathing of the European Union across the continent

MILLIONS of migrants here and British expats abroad now know who to blame for the worrying uncertainty they face about their futures: Angela Merkel and the EU.

Yes, the Brexit vote caused those fears initially. But they could have been quickly allayed. Vote Leave always insisted it wanted migrants legally in Britain to stay with full rights.

Theresa May wouldn’t guarantee it without getting the same assurance for Brits abroad — but she has at least pushed Brussels to agree that speedily, before we serve our Article 50 notice.

So it should. Whatever uncertainties Brexit brings, those who have made their lives here should not have to fear being kicked out. Nor should Brits abroad.

The likelihood of either is tiny — so it is all the more outrageous that Germany’s Mrs Merkel and EU President Donald Tusk refuse to strike such a deal.

They are doing so solely to make a political point about Brexit and try to strongarm Britain into triggering Article 50 before we are ready.

They are using the anxieties of millions of families as a weapon.

Such arrogance, and contempt for ordinary citizens, steadily increases the loathing of the EU across the continent.

Pay dead-end

WE understand the Government’s concern over some bosses’ pay. But none of its proposals would achieve a thing.

They are more likely to throw a spanner in the works at a time when Britain badly needs its companies to thrive.

Theresa May is right to be outraged at the likes of Philip Green — and a few chief executives raking in millions even as their companies fail. But the ideas Business Secretary Greg Clark unveiled look like meaningless gestures.

He should drop them and instead devote his energies to turbo-charging productivity and cutting red tape to let firms forge ahead post-Brexit.

That will help the “just managings” more than trying to trim a few fatcat salaries.

OUR thoughts and prayers are with the young lefties traumatised by discovering Kate Bush is a Theresa May fan.

It can be profoundly distressing to have your bubble burst. Ask any toddler.

What ought to worry Labour is that these teenage Trots weeping bitter tears of betrayal into their Twitter accounts are its only solid supporter base.

The Tories are 16 points ahead nationwide and dominant across almost every other social and age group.

That is because they are serious about government. Labour is too busy mourning a murderous, merciless dictator.

There’s another difference in their support too. If Kate Bush had called the vile Fidel Castro her hero,

Tories might well have rolled their eyes . . .

They’d still think she was a genius.
