Redruth shooting: Man shot in back and another hit with an axe sparking major police response as armed cops swarm pub

A MAN has been shot in the back and another hit in the head with an axe - sparking a major police response with armed cops swarming a pub.

Armed officers rushed to the scene in Redruth, Cornwall, where they found the two wounded men - one of whom is in a life-threatening condition.

They are also understood to have locked down punters inside the nearby Red Lion pub.

It is unclear whether a manhunt is underway following the assault.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to the area of Drump Road, Redruth at around 6.30pm today following a report of a serious assault.

"It was reported that two men within a property had sustained injuries - both have been taken to hospital.

"One man has sustained a suspected gunshot wound to the back which is currently being treated as life-threatening.

"A second man was reported to have been assaulted with an axe and sustained a serious head injury.

"A number of resources, including armed units and the police helicopter, remain in the area at this time and the incident is ongoing."

Detective Superintendent Jon Bancroft said: "Detectives and specialist officers are deployed to support our initial investigation and we will provide further information in due course.

"I would urge anyone with information which may assist our enquiries, including dash-cam and CCTV footage in the area, to get in touch and report it to us."
