She was riding her beloved 11-year-old horse Anakin in Sutton-on-the-Forest, near York, when a Honda Jazz collided with the pair.

The college student, from Bishop Burton, North Yorks, was left in agonising pain when she was thrown onto the windscreen of the car before flying over the roof and landing on the road behind.

And Jodie claims Anakin remained on the bonnet of the vehicle – smashing a huge hole in the windscreen – until the 89-year-old male driver reportedly hit the brakes before crashing into a grass verge.

The distressed horse bolted away through a hedge before being taken to the vets where he was found to have a fractured tibia bone as well as severe cuts and bruises.

Jodie said: "I was riding around the road with my friend and there was a bend about 250 yards behind us.

"I could hear the car coming so I told my friend to get in because the speed limit is 60 mph.

"It all happened really quickly from then on. The car came around the corner and smashed into the back of Anakin. I don't remember much of the few seconds after that.

"My friend told me I ended up on the windscreen of the car before rolling over the roof and landing behind the car – that is when I injured my arm and my elbow.

"The doctors told me that if I had not rolled over the roof then I would have been run straight over and it could have been a lot worse.

"It was very traumatic for Anakin and he is lucky to be alive - when I was lying in the road, I just thought 'he is going to die'."

Jodie now faces a six-week wait to get back on her feet after the crash but admitted it will be several months until she is able to get back in the saddle with Anakin.

After being released from hospital the showjumper has been reunited with her steed for the first time since the devastating accident..

She added: "It's going to take me a bit of time for me to get back on the horse - I'm not someone who scares easily but it is going to take me a while to ride near cars again and that will be the same for Anakin too.

"It was really emotional when I got to see him again and I was really trying not to cry.

"I had to stay in the car because of my injuries and the pain but it was great to see him and he seemed happy to see me, despite everything he has gone through in the last few days."

North Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "The incident is currently under investigation but no arrests have been made.

"We are making enquiries into what happened and these are ongoing."
