One in four Europeans think rape is ‘more ACCEPTABLE’ if victim had been drinking or wearing revealing clothes

SHOCKING new research has revealed a QUARTER of people living in Europe think rape is justified in certain situations - including if a victim is wearing "revealing" clothes or had been drinking.

In an EU-commissioned report into gender-based violence, researchers asked 30,000 people from across the EU if they thought rape was acceptable in a number of different circumstances.

These situations included if a victim was drunk or on drugs, wearing revealing clothes, walking home alone or had gone home with someone.

Worryingly, 27 per cent of respondents thought rape was acceptable in at least one situation.

10 per cent said it was justified if the victim didn't say no or fight back, 11 per cent believed it was acceptable if the victim went home with someone, and 12 per cent thought rape was okay if the victim was intoxicated.

In the UK, 22 per cent of people believe rape is acceptable in some circumstances - while 60 per cent of Romanians told researchers they think the same.

According to Rape Crisis, around 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales every year - while half a million adults are sexually assaulted.
