Turkey ‘UFO invasion’ video puts conspiracy theorists in a spin… but is everything really as it seems?

A SPATE of sightings of mysterious lights in the night skies over Turkey had some extraterrestrial true believers terrified that a UFO invasion was imminent.

Fortunately for the citizens of earth, the alien overlords decided against launching a conquest of the planet beginning with Istanbul.

One fretful observer tweeted: "So are we just going to ignore the UFO that was seen by millions in Turkey last night?" before adding: "This world needs aliens more than ever right now…give me something. @NASA ???"

Another wrote: "My location is Ankara. What is this? Is it really ufo? I am so afraid. I hope this is a joke. #ufoattacktoturkey."

The sightings even spawned its own hasthtag - #ufoattacktoturkey.

However, internet hoaxsters 'Goygoyrail' admitted the pictured were fake and released a statement saying that their trick had been "cheerful and entertaining activity".

Exasperated Turkish MP Aykut Erdoğdu even tweeted: "National insanity. Collectively, we're crazy... I wish you all good night."

Other social media users saw the funny side of the hysteria, posting pictures and videos mocking the phenomenon:
