FAMILIES have been greeted by disgusting scenes of squalor at a Barcelona airport after cleaning staff went on strike.

Shocking pictures show holidaymakers battling their way through piles of filth as they travel through the Spanish airport.

Cleaning staff have walked out in a two-day strike over budget cuts.

Airport operator AENA is reportedly looking to make savings of 1.3 million euros.

Shocking pictures show rubbish strewn across the airports floors and benches.

Bins are overflowing  with passengers having to navigate their way around the mess.

On social media one holidaymakers described the scenes as "post-armageddon".

Another said: "Oh wow! What happened to the Barcelona Airport?There's mess literally everywhere."

A third said: "Seriously Barcelona airport is beyond dirty".
