Man arrested following police investigation into ‘threatening Tweet’ which called for people to ‘Jo Cox’ the Tory MP Anna Soubry
Nottinghamshire Police has confirmed today that a 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the Tweet which was directed at Anna Soubry
A MAN has been arrested following a police investigation into an allegedly threatening Twitter post which called for people to "Jo Cox" a Tory MP.
Anna Soubry, who was the target of the online message, responded the the message and called the person a 'sad cowardly troll' yesterday.
Nottinghamshire Police has confirmed today that a 25-year-old man was arrested at this home in Bethnal Green on 'suspicion of sending malicious communications'.
It also said the man is in custody at an east London police station and has not been charged.
The tweet, which read "someone Jo Cox Anna Sourby please", misspelled the MP for Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire’s name.
The account has since been deleted. Ms Soubry replied to the message on Twitter: "Take it that wasn't a spelling mistake. You're a sad cowardly troll."
Later, she posted a screenshot of the post, telling her 31,000 followers, and said: "This is what has happened to our politics. Tolerance & free speech must prevail."
She said it was the "the second death threat in 3 days" she had received.
It comes a week after Jo Cox's murderer, 43-year-old Thomas Mair, was jailed for life for shooting and stabbing the Labour MP for Batley and Spen outside her constituency office in Birstall, West Yorkshire, in June.
Conservative MP Ms Soubry was a Remain supporter in the EU referendum, as was Mrs Cox.
It is understood the police are also investigating a separate threat made in a telephone call to Ms Soubry's constituency office on Wednesday.
