One of Italy’s most dangerous criminals Vincenzo La Porta caught after being spotted in pic celebrating Napoli title win

ONE of Italy's most dangerous gangsters has been snared by cops after being spotted in a snap celebrating a football win.

Vincenzo La Porta, 60, had been on the run from the law for 11 years before being identified in a photo of Napoli fans celebrating the side's first Serie A title win in 33 years.

The image showed the group revelling in the victory as they watched from a restaurant on the Greek island of Corfu, with La Porta holding a blue and white scarf aloft in joy.

La Porta, who is believed by cops to be associated with the Naples-based Camorra crime syndicate, was later stopped while riding his motor scooter on Friday after being identified from the picture.

Local police confirmed that he appeared in court on Saturday and will be held in jail until a panel of judges decide on his extradition.

Italian authorities are seeking extradition so that he can serve a 14-year sentence for criminal association, tax evasion and fraud, which he was convicted of in his absence.

He was ranked in the country's 100 most wanted list after fleeing justice in the early 2010s.

The owner of a different local restaurant told cops that La Porta had been working for him as an assistant chef for the past month while laying low on the island.

A spokesman for Italy's Carabinieri police force said: "Betraying him was his passion for soccer and for the Napoli team.

"With the championship victory, La Porta couldn't resist celebrating."
