London City airport cancels HALF of all flights as capital wakes up to thick blanket of fog

MORE than half of London City Airport's flights were cancelled this morning as the capital woke up blanketed by fog.

The airport in the east of the city was reporting an average delay time of 67 minutes after 43 flights were cancelled.

The news comes as the Met Office issued severe weather warnings of fog in the South East and the Midlands between 6pm yesterday evening and 9am this morning.

Forecasters warned the fog would then persist into today, adding that some patches could contain freezing fog restricting visibility to under 330ft.

There were additional reports of visibility of less than 900ft at Stansted, Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham and Leeds-Bradford airports this morning but they avoided significant delays.

In further bad news for people needing to travel the Met Office also warned that road travel was likely to be more difficult than normal owing to the conditions.

Frustrated flyers took to Twitter to vent their annoyance at the delays.

A London City Airport spokesperson said:“Unfortunately due to poor weather conditions caused by fog, passengers may experience delays and cancellations today.

"We recommend that they check with their airline for specific flight information.”

Despite the fog this morning the Met Office said yesterday we could experience spring like weather this December with the mercury hitting an unseasonable 14C after plummeting last week.

However they added that a White Christmas could still be on the cards with temperatures expected to drop to below average in the final run up to the big day.
