Pupils were forced to flee the Netherley building without their coats as a text to parents from the school advised them to bring different jackets for the youngsters.

A phone call to the school this morning is believed to have raised concerns among staff around health and safety, sparking a security alert.

The school's headteacher is listed as Mrs Roberts on its website.

Police are currently at the scene and are believed to be carrying out a search of the school, although this has not been confirmed by Merseyside Police.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "[We] can confirm officers attended St Gregory's Catholic Primary School, Netherley at around 9.44am this morning following reports of a suspicious phone call into the school.

"The school evacuated the pupils themselves. Officers are in attendance making further enquiries.

"Any criminal offences found to be committed during this incident, will be fully investigated by the police."

A text to parents sent by St Gregory's at 10.30am this morning reads: "St Gregory's emergency: all children and staff are safe and well. But we have had to evacuate the building.

"Children are in St Gregory's church. For reasons of safety please collect your children from St Gregory's Youth + Community Initiative as soon as possible.

"Please do not ring school. We need to keep the landline clear. Thank you. We stress everyone is safe."

A school spokesman said: "We have contacted parents and asked them to collect children as soon as possible as a precaution following a suspicious phone call.

"All pupils and staff are safe and police are now in attendance."
