Theresa May warns rebels not to delay Brexit as it would make people ‘lose faith’ in politics after 89 MPs rejected Government plans
THERESA MAY has warned rebel MPs not to delay starting the Brexit process as it could make people "lose faith" in politicians.
An overwhelming number of MPs last night backed Theresa May’s bid to begin leaving the EU in three months' time, but a number of rebels say they won't give the Government a "blank cheque" for Brexit.
The PM’s pledge to deliver on June’s landmark referendum verdict was backed by a massive majority of 372.
The showdown vote - called by Mrs May to call pro-EU MPs bluff - was seen as the first crucial test of the House of Commons’ support for Britain’s EU departure, after MPs campaigned against by a ratio of two to one.
Despite the Premier’s comfortable victory, 89 MPs still voted against Brexit and her timetable to begin it by March 31, 2017. They insisted they can't give the Government a "blank cheque" for Brexit without more information about what it would mean.
today that it was important that the public didn't think politicians were trying to stop the process.
"It's important that we don't leave it for too long, otherwise people will lose faith in their politicians, they'll think that we're trying to pull the wool over their eyes," she said.
"What I've been saying to people is I want to see as smooth and orderly a process as possible,' she added.

The Supreme Court’s top judge yesterday openly questioned whether a second vote on triggering the ‘Article 50’ exit talks were now even needed.
Hearing the government’s legal bid to press on with Brexit without a binding Commons bill to authorise it, Lord Neuberger said it would “seem a bit odd” to the man in the street if MPs were asked to go back and do it all again.
In the marathon six hour debate before the 7pm vote last night, Brexit Secretary David Davis turned his guns on split Labour to say: “The shadow cabinet cannot even decide whether it respects the will of the people."
“Today we will see whether they are prepared to back Britain.”
The 89 Brexit rebel MPs were 51 from the SNP, 23 Labour, five Lib Dems, three SDLP, three Plaid Cymru, two Independents, one Green – plus one Tory, ex-Cabinet minister and Ken Clarke.
Veteran EU enthusiast Mr Clarke slammed his own ministers for having “no idea what the strategy” is, adding: “They don’t even agree with each other”.
One Conservative also abstained, powerful Treasury Select Committee chairman Andrew Tyrie.
Mrs May saw off a damaging Tory rebellion and likely Commons defeat by agreeing to publish her Brexit plan before triggering formal exit talks.
Labour and a series of pro-EU Tory MPs used the debate to demand the PM lay out a detailed white paper in the new year setting out the different Brexit options for MPs to scrutinise.
And in a sign of troubles ahead, senior Tory Brexiteers also used the debate to make demands of the Government.
Ex-leader Iain Duncan-Smith insisted Mrs May must spell out that the UK will leave the Customs Union so the country is free to strike its own free trade deals, adding: “If we don’t, I’d rather stay in”.
Prominent Brexit campaigner and Tory MP Dominic Raab added: “I understand the calls for a plan or more debate, but the rebels today were sabotaging democracy”.
