Family storms out as Lucy Letby jury unable to reach verdict on 6 charges – with retrial decision to be made in 28 days

THE family of one of the babies Lucy Letby was charged with attempting to kill stormed out of the court as verdicts were read today.

The killer nurse, 33, was this afternoon found guilty of murdering seven babies, and attempting to kill six others.

But Letby could now find out if she faces a retrial in just 28 days as there were six charges the jury could not reach verdicts on.

The twisted nurse used insulin and air to inject newborns in a year-long killing spree while working on the neo-natal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The collapses and deaths of 13 children were not "naturally-occurring tragedies" but instead the work of "poisoner" Letby.

She denied 22 offences in total and was accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill ten others.

The jury failed to reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder, with the prosecutor asking for 28 days to consider if there will be a retrial.

Judge Mr Justice Goss thanked the jury for their "obvious care, diligence and sense of responsibility" and told them they were excused from further jury service for the rest of their lives.

Three female jurors wiped away tears as the judge thanked them for their service.

After the jury confirmed they were unable to reach verdicts in relation to four babies, the relatives of one of the infants stormed out of court.

today revealed that detectives have launched a new probe reviewing cases of thousands of babies treated by Letby.

It reported the cops have spent months going through information that both families had come forward with, and they had found going through files.

An independent inquiry has now been ordered by the government that will examine how concerns raised by doctors were dealt with and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

During a mammoth trial, jurors were told some of the newborns were repeatedly targeted by the nurse - including one baby Letby is alleged to have killed after three previous failed attempts.

Her reign of terror was finally uncovered after staff grew suspicious of the "significant rise" in the number of babies dying or .

Letby was found to be the "common denominator" among the deaths and collapses.

Police searched her three-bedroom home in Chester on July 3, 2018, after she was arrested and discovered a chilling cache of evidence.

The nurse had scribbled haunting notes in diaries and on Post-It notes, including one that read: "I am evil I did this."

Between 2015 and 2016, two babies on the neo-natal unit were "deliberately" poisoned with insulin, which was "no accident".

Some of the other babies were killed or harmed when air or milk was injected into their bloodstream or via a tube in their stomachs.
