Their house in Newport, Wales, has been dubbed one of the "best decorated in Europe" after people have been coming from all over the UK to see it.

They are not sure how much money has been spent on all the lights because they have built up their huge collection over the years.

However, the couple have said the figure definitely runs into several thousands.

People have to pay £2 to enter the home but all the money goes to charities such as Sparkle, Dreams and Wishes, St David's Hospice and the Samaritans.

Last they raised £17,500 for good causes.

Former pub landlords John and Shelia say they have "no idea" how many lights are now on the house but believe there are hundreds and thousands of individual bulbs.

John, 72, said: "We used to run the Irish pub and we were known then for having the best Christmas lights.

"When we sold up and moved four years ago, we decided to carry on the tradition at our house.

"It is a lot of hard work but it is worth it because every penny goes to charity. We have had people come from all over to see the lights, even from Ireland.

"Last year we had people come from all across the country including Manchester and London. It's great when you see the kids' faces.

"We have nearly twice as many lights as last year for people to come and see.

One of the neighbours Jane Cohen said: "I love this house, it must have the best Christmas decorations in Britain.

"It's just like the Christmas film Deck the Halls, but I think they might need a few more lights to be seen from space."
