Audi S4 written off after bungling bin lorry driver clipped man’s garage causing it to collapse on his car
He said he felt a vibration through his building when the garage collapsed
A MAN has been left bereft after a bin lorry driver clipped his garage which then collapsed onto his Audi S4 convertible.
Mario Kyriacou was furious when the garage at his Colchester flat toppled down on his car.
It was only after a neighbour raised the alarm Mr Kyriacou noticed the damage to the Audi.
By then the lorry driver had already fled the scene leaving business cards.
Last night Colchester Council said it "regretted" the car's damage and was investigating.
Mr Kyriacou, 51, said: "The car has been completely written off.
"It is an older car but a top of the range 'S4' convertible. When it was new it was £40,000. It was in immaculate condition."
The costly calamity unfolded around 11.15am yesterday when the dad-of-two was at home.
Mr Kyriacou said: "I was at home and I was on the phone and then I heard the binmen coming.
"Normally they're very loud anyway because we live in flats so they lift up mini-skips instead of wheely bins.
"When I heard the bang I thought it was them dropping one of those bins. It was a really really bad sound which I even thought it might have been a car crash.
"There was even a slight vibration."

After a neighbour knocked on Mr Kyriacou's door at 4pm he was told of the garage's destruction.
"I ran down and of course I was swearing quite a bit. I was so upset, I had all these emotions that you would have after seeing the car you love like that.
"But by that time someone had already come and put up barriers. It had happened at 11:15 and they must have done that within the hour."
When the driver spoke to the insurance company the council told him to ring he was told that they had not admitted liability yet.
But Mr Kyriacou said: "They left an insurance card to the third party along with the policy number, time of incident, vehicle details and driver's details.
"They have given everything a person might need to make a claim."
A neighbour's Triumph motorcycle was also crushed by the car port's collapsing roof.
Mr Kyriacou said: "I am still in shock, it is disbelief and I'm very upset indeed. But what can you do?"
He added: "They did leave details so I expect they'll sort it out I guess."
A Colchester Council spokesman described the incident as "unfortunate".
They added: "We regret the incident and we are following our procedures.
"We are in the process of involving our insurers."
