Rishi Sunak insists he will not rush into trade deal with India as he jets into New Delhi for G20 summit

RISHI Sunak insisted yesterday he would not rush into a trade deal with India.

As the PM arrived in New Delhi for the G20 summit, he said he was not setting a deadline for negotiations to finish.

He added that although progress had been made “we’re not there yet”.

Success would make Britain the first European country India has signed a free trade deal with.

The bumper deal would be a massive boost to our economy and a political coup for Rishi.

But there are fears India will demand thousands of new work visas and tax cuts for Indians working in a Britain in return for a deal.

Mr Sunak — the first PM of Indian heritage to visit the country — was greeted by Rishimania as he landed in New Delhi.

He and wife Akshata Murty were met by traditional dancers.

Speaking of his first visit to the country since entering Downing Street, he said: “It’s special.

“I’ll be visiting a country very near and dear to me.

“I saw somewhere I was referred to as India’s son-in-law, which I hope was meant affectionately.

“I’m excited to be back.”

He added: “It’s nice to have Akshata with me.”

Keegan’s ‘correct’

RISHI Sunak backed his under-fire Education Secretary last night.

The Prime Minister said Gillian Keegan was right to shut schools over dodgy concrete fears.

It comes after fellow Tories said Ms Keegan had opened a Pandora’s box, which risked more public buildings having to close over Raac fears.

But speaking while in New Delhi for the G20 summit, the PM said her department had “acted exactly correctly”.

He added: “We will ensure the safety of children and buildings.”
