AN Army widow is to get £775,000 compensation after her husband died in a crash involving a faulty military Land Rover.

L/Cpl Kevin Greenfield, 29, was a passenger when a damaged tyre blew out.

The dad of four, known as Sam, suffered fatal injuries when a car then hit the vehicle in darkness on the A14 near Nacton, Suffolk.

Wife Charlene Greenfield, 31, of Carlisle, sued the MoD, which admitted liability at London’s High Court today.

Mr Greenfield was the front seat passenger in the Land Rover when it suffered a tyre blow out causing the vehicle to lose control.

It ploughed into the central barrier and was "positioned precariously" with lights that were not working to warn oncoming traffic, the court heard.

L/Cpl Greenfield got out to help another passenger but then another car hit the vehicle in the darkness, propelling it along the road.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Ipswich Hospital but died the same day.

A police report found the Land Rover's tyre burst because of earlier damage and that the loss of all power occurred because the vehicle's batteries had not been correctly secured.

L/Cpl Greenfield served with 23 Engineer Regiment and had seen tours of Afghanistan, Kenya, Congo and Northern Ireland.

The MoD had initially contested the claims before agreeing to settle the case on the first day of the High Court hearing.

In court documents, L/Cpl Greenfield was described as a "dedicated soldier" and a "loving and devoted father" to four sons.
