Eco victory

AT long last common sense prevails on Net Zero. We congratulate Rishi Sunak.

His eco delays represent a huge victory for our Give Us A Brake campaign.

The Sun has long said that the hasty, arbitrary climate deadlines which past Tory Governments committed us to would prove ruinous.

That our readers could not yet afford to buy battery cars or vans or abandon their gas boilers for vastly more expensive and less effective heat pumps.

A delay was inevitable at some point to allow the technology to improve and prices to fall. The PM has commendably made that call.

As Mr Sunak says, we can still aim for 2050 as a Net Zero date. That will not appease the eco lobby.

But it was ridiculous to ban new petrol and diesel cars five years before the EU.

Or to impose other restrictions damaging our economy and families’ finances while bigger nations pumping far more carbon into the atmosphere do much less.

UK emissions are comparatively tiny and since 2010 we have led the world’s major nations in cutting them.

It is absurd to pretend these welcome and sensible delays will do any damage to the global battle to limit climate change.

Plot sickens

A YEAR before an election, the cancellation of Brexit under Keir Starmer is already under way.

Labour’s leader arrived in Paris yesterday to find France and Germany had tailor-made for him an ingenious plot.

It would grant Britain associate membership of the EU to which, as PM, he could sign us up without even holding the “People’s Vote” he used to long for.

We would once again take orders from the European Court. And Labour would inevitably then argue that rejoining in full was merely a small step further.

The Tories have already ruled it out. The downsides are obvious. Not Starmer.

Remainer pundits are rolling the pitch, ludicrously declaring Brexit — a long-term project not yet three years old — “a disaster” despite all contrary evidence.

Now they just need Leave voters to sleepwalk into installing Starmer in No10 out of sheer antipathy towards the Tories.

True heroes

THE word “hero” is often used so glibly it can lose its force.

But it is truly apt for two life-saving NHS medics, Dr Benjamin Marriage and paramedic Kevin Cuddon.

On Pages 2 and 3 we tell how they saved a mum run over by two trains at a London Tube station. She was bleeding to death — but thanks to them she lived.

The Sun was honoured to pay tribute to them with the 999 Hero award at our glittering Who Cares Wins ceremony.
