But despite his own tumble, the Kingston and Surbiton MP plans to make the Tories sink in the polls with a proposed campaign to drop a pledge to build 380,000 homes a year.

The conference will vote on the motion tomorrow.

It comes after Labour threatened to report the Lib Dems to the police over by-election “smear” tactics.

The party sent a cease and desist letter alleging “cynical” behaviour against their candidate in the Mid-Bedfordshire contest.
