What prison is Lucy Letby in?

NURSE Lucy Letby is serving a whole life sentence after being found guilty last month of murdering seven babies.

The 33-year-old was convicted of the killings at the neonatal unit where she worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.

What prison is Lucy Letby in?

Letby appeared at a Manchester Crown Court hearing on September 25 2023 via videolink from HMP New Hall in Flockton, West Yorkshire.

It was previously suggested she could be held at HMP Low Newton in County Durham.

She spoke only to confirm her name while sitting behind a desk in a conference room at New Hall.

The hearing scheduled a retrial on an outstanding charge of attempted murder.

She is accused of attempting to murder a baby girl known as Child K in February 2016.

Letby was sentenced to a whole life order after being convicted in August 2023 of murdering seven babies.

What category is New Hall prison?

The jail is classified as a closed-category prison for female adults, juveniles and young offenders.

The highest alert level female adult prisoners is "Restricted", similar to category A for male jails - covering those whose escape would be seen as highly dangerous to the public or national security.

The closed category is a step down, but with an emphasis on any potential escapes being "made very difficult".

The jail opened in 1933 as a "halfway house" for prisoners from nearby HMP Wakefield approaching the end of their sentences.

It has been a women's prison since 1987 and now has capacity for 381 iinmates.

Who are the most famous New Hall prison inmates?

Convicted serial killer Rose West was moved to New Hall in 2019 from Low Newton.

The transfer came after a fellow inmate attacked her.

West was convicted of ten murders in 1995, after her husband Fred West hanged himself while in jail awaiting trial.

The Sun has previously told of West occupying her days at New Hall with book clubs, knitting, painting and watching television.

Other killers serving time behind bars at New Hall have included Frankie Smith.

She was jailed for eight years in December 2021 for  of 16-month-old daughter Star Hobson.

Her partner Savannah Brockhill was given life with a minimum of 25 years after being convicted of murder.

Another New Hall inmate has been killer mum Sarah Barrass, who was sentenced to life with a minimum of 35 years in November 2019 for murdering two sons and trying to kill another four of her children.

What have former inmates said about New Hall prison?

New Hall was called an "overwhelmingly safe and respectful place" after an unannounced inspection visit by the prisons watchdog in November 2022.

Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor praised what he called ";reasonably good" work to promote rehabilitation.

His report also gave the thumbs-up to specialist facilities such as a mother-and-baby unit and another for women with personality disorders.

An inmate named Nicola was also appreciative, in an interview when nearing the end of a three-and-a-half-year sentence for robbery.

She told the : "The last time I was in prison, none of these services were available.

"You were in jail, you were sent out - if you had nowhere to go, that was your problem."

She spoke about receiving support such as a drug rehab programme, as well as education helping her to achieve NVQs in catering.
